The Ommiad Moorish dynasty in Portugal was present in the South for more than three centuries (711 to 1031) and amongst the cultural heritage found in the region are Islamic board games, on exhibition at the Alcoutim Castle, the Castelo Velho of the municipality, and the wall of the Silves Castle, must stops on this route which begins in Faro.
Local gastronomy and ancestral traditions which also define the Algarve will complete the routes with enriching and surely memorable heritage. This is the ideal opportunity to discover these treasures and all the heritage still present in the Algarve. The journey travels through the Ommiad legacy and tells the story of regions in seven countries of the Mediterranean basin: Italy, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Spain (Andalusia) and Portugal (Algarve). On a global level, the Ommiad Route is headed by “El Legado Andalusí” foundation and financed by the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI) programme, under the trans-border cooperation project in the Mediterranean. The Portuguese representation is handled by the Algarve Tourist Board (RTA) and by the Algarve Regional Cultural Board, and will include 11 municipalities and a total of 36 localities.
