Portuguese tile-painting workshops
The name comes from Arabic and soon became a popular tradition in Portuguese lands.
The Portuguese tile or azulejo is 500 years old and is one of the most symbolic decorative and architectural element. It is found on the walls of churches, palaces and urban spots.
One of the activities available at Herdade dos Grous is the Portuguese azulejo workshop, run by master ceramist Margarida Araújo. Here you learn how to mould the traditional tile in clay and then paint a personalised design.
The following day, after being baked in the traditional oven, the tiles are handed over to the clients, who get to keep a lovely souvenir of their stay.
